what i do know:
i definitely want to incorporate pattern into it as usual
i can balance the busy nature of the patterns with flat colours
i need to do something in reality and digitally that has a corresponding theme
the size is A3 as a minimum
the digital stuff is to be done in photoshop and illustrator
collage can be done with anything
i also need to make up an artist's statement to go with the above, explaining influences and resources etc.
i bought a photoshop magazine which had some really cool looking pieces in it and also the latest IDN magazine which features collage as its main story, which again is inspirational, but i seem to be incapable of coming up with an idea which utilises these examples.
i'm already going to be making use of other people's patterns so i would prefer to at least come up with my own concept for it.
the thoughts on the matter that ive had so far are:
*looking at the difference in journa;s and the ability to decorate/customise in the different formats - discarded because i already need to hand in this deviant art page and a visual diary as well so it seems like doubling up.
* thought of comparing real art to digital art in an attempt to decipher my feelings about the two, which i think is more authentic, and in the process collaging cool works of art - discarded because i cant see how i could realise it decently, and doesn't incorporate the patterns
*taking photos of melbourne, just normal digital photos of mine and collaging over the top of them to make them look surreal but also retain the features of the city - discarded just because i dont think its a very good idea, its too flat and not very interesting
just had an idea that still relates to that last one though: to use images of things in the city but intersperse them with elements of pattern whether in the shape of city things or just as decorate extra bits. what i am truly interested in with the pattern obsession is how they can be decorative in an urban setting such as the william morris designs on furniture and carpet and wallpaper, or the liberty groups designs playing a part in interior design, the gamble house is a work of art to be lived in, not just a house. i like the idea of making life in general a work of art.
there may be something here but im not convinced.
either way i will have to make a decision asap so i can start working on the stupid project. i want to come up with something wonderful though, its a good brief overall with a lot of potential. i just wish i could be more creatively forthcoming
